Pretty Pencil Crayon Earrings

I ordered these adorable pencil crayon earrings from Huiyitan on Etsy a few weeks ago, and postal service from the UK to the Yukon being what it is, they finally arrived yesterday.
Etsy is a lifesaver up here; the options for local shopping are pretty slim, and Etsy has the benefit of providing lots of pretty things to look at, lust over and sometimes even buy--plus the fun of waiting for something to arrive in the mail.  I love getting mail.
I wasn't looking for anything in particular when I found these studs.  I was using the "surprise me" function on the Etsy Explorer, and they were impossible to resist.
They are pleasant to wear--although fairly large studs, they are very light and even after wearing them for a few hours, I don't find myself fidgeting with them the way I do with heavy jewelry.  Highly recommended.

Meat & Potatoes #29

This edition of Meat & Potatoes was extra-special.  I teamed up with the Kings of Dawson City, Ben Rudis and Brendan Reese, to do some live broadcasting from the Film Fest street barbecue, which was held during my usual Sunday time slot.  Ben and Brendan kicked things off out in the street by teasing some "Kitimavictims", and later on things really got cooking when Ben took over in the studio and I headed over to the barbecue.  Having met many filmmakers over the course of the weekend, I saw all sorts of people I knew and wanted to talk to, and just kept accosting person after person and making them talk to me.  It was pretty amazing and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to do this.  Big thanks to Ben and Brendan, and also to CFYT President Jen Laliberte for helping us get going with the remote broadcasting gear.

Hopefully I'll be able to get a podcast of this episode up and running soon.

In the meantime, the playlist:

Film Fest Posts...

As I mentioned previously, I love volunteering for the Dawson City International Short Film Festival.  I posted about the festival, along with some other great contributors, on the KIAC blog.

Here's a list of my posts:

Meat & Potatoes #28

Aired Sunday April 17, 2011.

It was an extra-special show this week:  I had my first ever on-air guest!  Dan Sokolowski, programmer extraordinaire of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival, joined me for the last half-hour of my show so that we could give away some sexy sexy film fest swag and tix to the festival next weekend.  He also contributed some music to the show, keeping it movie-themed with songs from Risky Business, A Prairie Home Companion and The Hours.  Dan stuck around after the end of my show to keep giving things away and hang out with Brendan for his solo edition of The Kings of Dawson City.

I also treated listeners to three tracks off of the new TV on the Radio release, Nine Types of Light, and played a really awesome Kenny Rogers cover by Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Some people out there get excited about Christmas.  Or their birthday.  Or maybe an anniversary.  And I will admit that I am looking forward to celebrating an anniversary soon (one whole year with Ben as of May--how lovely!), I don't think there is any annual event that gets me quite as excited as the Dawson City International Film Festival.

I spend a lot of time planning for it: many, many sessions in the classroom at KIAC voting off the unworthy films and praying that my favourites will get in.  I attend the committee meetings, and sometimes even get roped into writing the minutes (I hate writing minutes).  I silkscreened pillows last year, and this year it was t-shirts.  Last year I drank too much at the martini naming meeting, and fully intend to do the same thing this year.  I helped get the first-ever film festival community blog off the ground.

This year, I am heavy into the blog.  Like, not just planning to post the weekend-of, but also getting lots and lots and lots of amazing stuff posted in advance.  I emailed a long list of filmmakers who have work in the festival, and asked them to tell me about their inspiration and why the submitted to the festival.  I was overwhelmed by how many people took the time to respond, and now have everything posted at the film festival blog's new home (we've joined forces with the KIAC blog so that all the KIAC-y awesomeness is in one convenient location).  It's a great read, and hopefully will get you feeling the film fest love.

Still from Sad Bear, which is showing on Friday at 8 pm during the Secret Tales Screening.
I wrote a little bit about my own little movie here, and you can find the full festival schedule here.

Thank you, Mrs. Muir

Last night Ben and I watched The Ghost and Mrs Muir, and I realized that I finally know how to live my life.

Step one:  Move to a haunted house.  This should be easy, because apparently they rent cheap.  Actually, I may not even have to move.  I already live in a cabin that is over 100 years old--maybe I just need to tap the right floorboard?

Step two:  Get the ghost to dictate his life story to me.  Preferably with lots and lots of antiquated cuss-words which I will object to typing, because I am such a Lady.

Step three:  Use my feminine wiles to get an appointment with a publisher, who will so love my book from the first page that he will read the whole thing in one sitting, ignoring all other considerations.  He will immediately agree to publish my book, and I will smile and say "Thank you very much."

Step four: Kick back and watch the money roll in.  Apparently one can make so much money with a single book that one will never have to work again or ever worry about money--ever.  Actually, one book can make you so rich that you can buy your haunted house, keep your maidservant employed until you croak and spend your time doing nothing but taking long walks on the beach followed by afternoon naps.

See?  Easy!  All I need is a man to tell me what to write and I'm all set.

Swimming with Finn

My first ever stop-motion animation, made in January at a KIAC workshop.  Thanks to Dan for his great advice--"don't sneeze" is an unforgettable bit of filmmaking wisdom.

Meat & Potatoes #26

Aired Sunday April 3rd, 2011.

Lots of booky content on the show this past week.  I talked about reading Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel We, an early example of dystopian fiction that was a big influcence on George Orwell's 1984.  I also discussed Mikhail Bulgakov's science fiction work, The Fatal Eggs, which tells what happens when a mad scientist's discovery of a new "ray of life" falls into incompetent, bureaucratic hands.  I then read the first chapter from Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, one of my favourite novels of all time.  It tells the story of the devil's visit to Moscow one spring in the late 1920s--hence the set of 'devil music' that made it on to the show (songs 14,15 and 16 below).
